Implementation of a MODIS Aerosol Algorithm for Air Pollution Detection

چکیده
Air pollution has several negative consequences to life. The Continuous Air Monitoring Stations (CAMS) can calculate the levels of this contamination, but their range is too small. An alternative for the detection of the pollution is the use of satellites. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), instrument on board of the satellite Terra and Aqua from the NASA, allows the calculation of the Aerosol Optical Thickness (degree in which aerosols prevent the transmission of light). The official product has a pixel resolution of 10 km., not good enough for a deeper analysis. A Simplified high resolution MODIS Aerosol Retrieval Algorithm (SARA) is implemented to improve this resolution. The algorithm creates a new raster with a resolution of 500 m. The AERONET data is not used for the calculation, instead, some aerosol models from the software OPAC (Optical Properties of Aerosols and clouds) are used. The algorithm is tested on the region of Bogotá, Colombia. The results are compared to the PM10 observations (Particle matter less than 10 μm/m3) measured by the Bogotá Air Quality Network CAMS showing a correlation of 0.51. Several validations are discussed.

متن کاملRetrieval of Aerosol Optical Thickness using MODIS 500 x 500m, a study in Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta region
Aerosol detection and monitoring by satellite observations has been substantially developed over past decades. While several state-of-art aerosol retrieval techniques provide aerosol properties in global scale, the more detail characteristics remain unknown because most of the satellite sensors are limited to 1km resolution observations. However, a new aerosol retrieval algorithm for the Modera...

Aerosol distributions in East Asia are complicated owing to both natural factors and human activities. In recent years, influence of yellow sand and biomass burning aerosols generated by agricultural biomass burning (ABB) has been noted upon the severe air pollution episodes. This work intends to make the retrieval algorithm more efficient and to make the aerosol model more tractable as far as ...

Aerosol optical depth (AOD) is a critical variable in estimating aerosol concentration in the atmosphere, evaluating severity of atmospheric pollution, and studying their impact on climate. With the assistance of the 6S radiative transfer model, we simulated apparent reflectancein relation to AOD in each Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) waveband in this study. [1] Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) measurements (7 channels: 0.47–2.1 mm, 250–500 m resolutions) provide us with new insights into the characteristics of global aerosols. MODIS retrieves not only aerosol loading but also the fraction of fine mode particle. In this paper we demonstrate MODIS capability for use in monitoring global, regional, and local air pollution. Three ...
